Little Gilles Bouhours, his biographers point out, was prepared and sent by the Virgin Mary to present the sign that Pope Pius XII had been waiting for and had long asked the Virgin for. Thus, on 1 November 1950, the Pope proclaimed the Dogma of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in body and soul into heaven in the apostolic constitution ‘Munificentissimus Deus’.
On 24 February 1960, little Gilles fell ill without doctors being able to diagnose the cause of his deterioration, and after receiving the Anointing of the Sick, confessing and taking communion, he died.
The full quote is even more profound – “People are often unreasonable and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are honest, people may cheat you. Be honest anyway. If you find happiness, people maybe jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today maybe forgotten tomorrow. Do good anyway. Give the world the best you have and it may never be enough. Give your best anyway. For you see, in the end, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway.”
